Product details:

EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation is a patented breakthrough product in the concrete slab insulation industry. It is specifically designed for use as a thermal barrier under concrete and works superbly with radiant heat systems. EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation (1/4" to 5/16") thick, is manufactured with a single layer metalized reflective sheet laminated between two layers of strong polyethylene bubbles. EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation has a compression strength of 140 PSI. Our insulation is thin and lightweight, making it easy to conform to your grade and reduces any worry of leaving pockets or voids like traditional insulation.

Unlike traditional bubble insulation, where the foil is exposed, our patented product is encapsulated. This was done for two main reasons; the integrity of the foil and the airspace it creates for effectiveness. If the foil surface comes into direct contact with certain acidic soils it can corrode the reflective properties of the insulation. This can also happen during the curing process of concrete. For this reason, standard radiant barriers or bubble insulation are not an appropriate insulation for an underground application. It is also important to maintain an airspace on one side of the insulation in order for it to be reflective. By laminating the reflective metalized sheet in between two layers of our sturdy bubble insulation we have ensured the integrity of the foil by protecting it from corrosion and deterioration. We are also maintaining an air space by placing the foil in between the bubble layers.

Most importantly, EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation reflects 57% of radiant heat back up towards the surface, whereas without under concrete insulation, this heat would travel down and be lost in the soil. Additional benefits are that EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation provides a vapor and radon barrier.

R-Value Of Radiant Barriers

Rather than rating by R-value, all radiant barrier products are measured by their reflective and emissive properties. Once installed, EcoFoil CBF Under Slab insulation is 57% reflective, meaning the product reflects 57% of radiant heat back to its source. There are some companies out there posting big R-Value numbers for their radiant barriers, but those numbers are rating the entirety of the system—including the product, air gap, and other building materials. In reality, most radiant barriers by themselves have little to no R-Value. If you need to satisfy a building code of a specified R-Value, we recommend the use of a traditional insulation in conjunction with our radiant barrier in order to meet code. For more information on R-values, see our How It Works page or contact a member of our friendly service team via chat, by calling (888) 349-3645, or using the form here.

Important - The seams of EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation must be taped together so when finished the insulation acts like one sheet. We recommend our 3" White Seam Tape for this application. Just like the name implies, this insulation can be used under any concrete slab to reflect 57% of radiant heat.

Easy to install

I precut them to length, about 24 feet to make them easier on me to install. I did not have a help. Once I got them butted up to each other I taped them together, then trimmed the ends to fit.
Side note, I did take a small piece and brought it into the house, I got and ice pack out of the freezer and laid it on top of it. I put may hand on top of the Eco foil for 3 minutes to see if I could/would fell the cold, I did not notice any cool or coolness.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be voids (or an air gap) between the insulation and the ground?

No. Unlike traditional, rigid products like foam, Under Slab insulation is flexible and will easily conform to peaks and valleys in the ground. The weight of the concrete will ensure there are no gaps, preventing common problems like cracking in the concrete.

Does this product work well under pex tubing/radiant flooring?

Yes! This product is the ideal insulation for radiant floor heating in driveways, garages, and basements.

Will this product work for radiant flooring on upper levels?

Under Concrete Slab insulation is best for use under concrete—typically basements, garages, driveways, and sidewalks. For wood subfloors on upper levels, it's best to install Between Joist Insulation between the floor joists, or standard Double Bubble Insulation under the floor joists. Learn more about Radiant Floor Insulation here.

    Should I tape the seams?

Yes. This is an important part of the installation. Without tape, concrete will leak into the seams and the insulation will no longer form a vapor barrier. We recommend metalized insulation tape for most Under Slab applications, but white insulation tape will work as well.

Should I overlap the product while installing?

No. As long as each panel is joined edge-to-edge, and all seams are taped, it's not necessary to overlap the Under Slab Bubble Insulation. For more information on how to install bubble insulation under concrete, view our Under Concrete Slab application page.
