Product details:

EcoFoil Double Bubble Foil Insulation is primarily used in pole barnsmetal buildingsbasement wallscrawl spaces, and storage units located in moderate and colder climates. Double bubble insulation combines the heat-shielding properties of solid radiant barrier with two layers of polyethylene bubbles, which acts as a built-in air gap that reduces contact between temperatures on either side of the product. The double layer of bubbles effectively combats the formation of frost and condensation that can occur when temperature differences are extreme on either side of the material. It's very thin (approximately 1/4"), lightweight, and installs easily with minimal equipment. Our white/foil variety offers the same benefits as foil/foil, but with a white finish that faces towards your finished space, providing a more "finished" look.

A radiant barrier and vapor barrier, all in one product

Not only does Double Bubble Insulation reflect radiant heat, when properly installed with tape it also acts as a vapor barrier, preventing the passage of moisture and other unwanted particles which can cause mold. In order to establish a vapor barrier, you must tape all seams and joints to prevent air passage, keeping moisture and other particles from passing through.

Radiant barrier vs traditional insulation

Radiant barrier bubble insulation works differently compared to traditional insulation like fiberglass and spray foam.

  • Traditional insulation works to absorb heat and is measured by R-value. The higher the R-value, the thicker the material and the more heat it can absorb.
  • Radiant barrier bubble insulation, on the other hand, reflects heat back to its source (whether that's your furnace or the sun.)

When used together, these two insulation types can provide a highly effective one-two punch that will keep your building warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

R-Value Of Radiant Barriers

Because these two insulation types have different purposes, their effectiveness is measured differently. Rather than rating by R-value, all radiant barrier products are measured by their reflective and emissive properties. When installed properly with an air gap on one side of the product, double bubble insulation will reflect heat away from your building in the summer, and keep heat in during the winter.

There are some companies out there posting big R-Value numbers for their radiant barriers, but those numbers are rating the entirety of the system—including the product, air gap, and other building materials. In reality, most radiant barriers by themselves have little to no R-Value. If you need to satisfy a building code of a specified R-Value, we recommend the use of a traditional insulation in conjunction with our radiant barrier in order to meet code. For more information on R-values, see our How It Works page or contact a member of our friendly service team via chat, by calling (888) 349-3645, or using the form here.

EcoFoil Double Bubble Foil Insulation is not to be used under concrete slabs. For under concrete slab or radiant floor insulation applications, we recommend EcoFoil Under Slab Insulation.

Love the stuff. We can feel a difference in temperature already! We are insulating our 40 x 40 garage/workshop/music room!! When we stand beside the wall without the double bubble it is warm. With the insulation installed you don't feel the heat radiating inward. We put the silver inside and the white side facing out. Finishes it more and it looks nice. We stapled it to wood furring we adhered (with Liquid Nails made for metal installations) to the inside of the metal building. We used the tape to put two pieces together to hold them. Good product!

Alice,
Thank you for taking the time to provide a review on this product! We are so happy to hear that this made a difference in temperature in your garage! Customer feedback like yours helps us to continue to assess our products so that we can provide top quality products. Please reach out if we can be of any assistance in the future!

White Double Bubble

Purchased the white / foil double bubble and white tape. Installing it now stapled white side facing down as a flat ceiling on the bottom of trusses in 2 detached heated northern WI garages. Just finishing the taping as I write this.

So far easy to work with, strong, lightweight, easy to cut & tape around overhead lights, electrical receptacles, garage door hardware, posts & openers. Nice clean finish.

The white tape adheres & seals very well. The white finish brightens up the inside of the garages as well as providing the vapor / insulating barrier I wanted. So far so good.

John,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review! We're happy to hear that both that both the double bubble and white tape are working well for your project. Quality of our products is very important to us and we appreciate your feedback as it helps us to understand how our products are working in different applications. Please reach out if we can be of any assistance in the future!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose Single Bubble or Double Bubble Reflective Insulation?

Generally speaking, you should install Double Bubble in colder, extreme climates with cold winters (Northern US). Double Bubble Reflective Insulation will help prevent the formation of frost and condensation when temperatures are very cold on one side of the material, and warm on the other. The larger these temperature differences are, the greater the risk of condensation. If you’re not as concerned about condensation, Single Bubble Insulation could work for your application.

    What do the bubbles do?

The layer of bubbles provides a thermal break between hot and cold air, and helps eliminate condensation from forming in your structure. Double Bubble has two layers of bubbles for extra condensation prevention. Double Bubble Reflective Insulation is typically used in the northern states where temperature differences inside vs. outside your structure are extreme, typically during cold, frigid winters.

How much tape do I need?

1 roll of tape will be needed for every 500 sq ft of reflective insulation. It's important to tape the seams between adjoining sheets—never use tape to attach the product directly to your structure. Taping the seams creates a vapor barrier when installed properly, and helps ensure the reflective properties of the insulation.

    Which tape do I choose?

Should I choose a white finish or a foil finish?

Some customers prefer the white finish as a visual preference. Both White and Foil finishes reflect radiant heat equally well.

How do I install Double Bubble Insulation?

Installation methods will vary, depending on your application. If your structure has exposed studs, the material can be stapled with a staple gun. If you have nothing to staple the product to, choose a spray adhesive like Spray-Lock Multi-Purpose Eco-Friendly Spray Adhesive. More information on installation methods can be found under the "Shop by Application" tab in the main menu at the top of this page. Don't hesitate to reach out to our team if you'd like any advice on your specific project. Give us a call at 888.349.3645, send us a chat, or contact us electronically. We are always happy to help!
