Winter Woes: Understanding Thermal Bridging

Thermal bridging is a major source of heat loss.What is thermal bridging?Thermal bridging is a term that most of us don’t use on a daily basis, but it is something we experience every day. Put simply, thermal bridging is when heat naturally moves from a warm space to a cold space. It does so through the path of least resistance.Is there thermal bridging in my home?Yes. Your walls may be filled with several inches of insulation to combat the colder temps outside and keep the warm air inside, but every 16" there is piece of lumber that is uninsulated. These wood studs are the path of least resistance that allows the heat to escape your home.How does this affect my heating bill?If you measure the heat resistance of a wall system that is insulated with R-19 insulation you will find that the actual result is much lower than R-19. It is estimated that wood framing can result in a 25% drop in thermal resistance. You may have noticed that when the temperatures drop outside, your exterior walls radiate cold air. This is a direct result of thermal bridging.What can I do to prevent thermal bridging?When reflective double bubble insulation is installed between the framing and and the drywall of your home, the double layer of bubbles creates what is known as a thermal break.  This break is a physical disruption of the conductive heat transfer that is thermal/heat transfer.  EcoFoil double bubble insulation is an excellent addition to standard fiberglass insulation that will eliminate thermal bridging when installed properly.How to install double bubble insulationStep 1: Insulate the wall with standard mass insulation.Step 2: Roll EcoFoil double bubble insulation horizontally across the studs and tape the seams.Step 3: Install 1" furring strips on the studs to create an air gap.Step 4: Finish drywall as usual.For more information about radiant barrier products visit www.ecofoil.com or call 888-349-3645 to speak with one of our technical experts.
